tail between one's legs - to feel ashamed especially after a scolding

ex. He left the house with his tail between his legs, after his mom scolded him in front of his peers.

Idioms are one of the most important things about language learning, I always think. The danger, though, is sounding unnatural when you use them, either because you use them wrong or because they're idioms from a different historical period or society. You don't want to sound like a Victorian gentleman accidentally! So I always advise my students to listen out for idioms in conversations and newspaper articles and films, and write them down. I think the first stage has to be hearing them in real life situations. Using them is the second stage.
