Idioms are one of the most important things about language learning, I always think. The danger, though, is sounding unnatural when you use them, either because you use them wrong or because they're idioms from a different historical period or society. You don't want to sound like a Victorian gentleman accidentally! So I always advise my students to listen out for idioms in conversations and newspaper articles and films, and write them down. I think the first stage has to be hearing them in real life situations. Using them is the second stage.
